The Importance of Baptism

Congratulations! Whether you are an adult studying for your own Baptism or you are preparing for the Baptism of your child, you are taking an extremely important step in your and your family’s spiritual life. Baptism is necessary for salvation. Our Lord Jesus Christ instituted Baptism as the means of removing original sin from our souls, of being born again and incorporated into His Mystical Body, and of becoming members of His Church. There is nothing else more important for you right now than to ensure that you and your family members are baptized.

What Are the Requirements for Baptisms?

Baptism is available for every last human being on earth. Our Lord desires the salvation of all mankind and He established Baptism as the means for our salvation. As such, it is necessary for salvation. In order to ensure that everyone who desires Baptism understands its importance, there are certain requirements for Baptisms.

Requirements for Infant Baptisms:

Requirements for parents planning to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism of their children need to:

  • Visit the Basilica office to fill out the Baptism Registration Form
  • Child’s State issued birth certificate (Original)
  • Proof of attendance to pre-baptismal classes for parents
  • Family of the child should be parishioners of San Albino. If from another Parish you must obtain a letter from your pastor giving Fr. Christopher permission to Baptize your child. 

Requirements for Godparents.

  • Be baptized roman Catholic
  • If married, they must be married in the Roman Catholic Church
  • If single, not living with someone or married civilly outside the Church
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age
  • If there will be two Godparents, one must be male, and the other female (Only one Godparent is necessary)
  • All Godparents must attend pre-baptismal classes in their home parish or provide a copy of a pre-baptism class certificate attended within the last five (5) years
  • Confirmed in the Catholic Church
  • Provide a copy of their baptismal certificate that has been issued within the last six (6) months
  • If the baptismal certificate does not show the persons Confirmation and their Catholic Church Marriage (if applicable) individuals copies of these certificates must be provided
  • Must be attending Mass regularly and be living in full communion with the Catholic Church
  • If not a parishioner of San Albino, the Godparent(s) must provide a Letter of Good Standing from their current parish
